What is Mindfulness Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia?

The program involves psychoeducation by two group facilitators (a doctor, and a nurse or counsellor), group discussion, in-session meditation and mindfulness practices, and homework involving meditation, sleep hygiene, and sleep compression. It follows the Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Insomnia protocol by Jason Ong (Ong, J. C. 2017. American Psychological Association) which blends mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia.

Who Is appropriate for this group?

Participants with chronic insomnia: Difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or awakening too early in the morning. The sleep disturbances occur at least three times a week and have been present for the last 3 months. The sleep disturbance results in daytime dysfunction.

What are the logistics?

•All participants require a referral from a licensed physician or nurse practitioner.
•Prior to starting the program, we ask you to complete some questionnaires and a confidentiality/consent form, and if we feel you may be appropriate for the program you will be invited to book an insomnia consultation with Dr. Laura McLean, and an intake assessment with Andrea Lemp, RN, MSN.
•This is a virtual group insomnia treatment. Meeting will take place on Zoom. Groups are 6-10 participants, with 2 facilitators.
•Sessions are 2 hours per week for 8 weeks. A maximum of 2 missed sessions are permitted over the course of the program.
